We need to hang out in Indiana and kill some time as we wait for Lennox’ vet appointment at Purdue. With temps in the 90’s and humidity at 80%, Ari didn’t want to stay at a primitive camp at Tippacanoe.. He wanted air conditioning and propane is costing around $4.50/gallon. So, we decided to skip Tippacanoe and spend the weekend at Cuttin’ Up Stables.
No trails at the stables. The horses are in large box stalls, which is probably good as rain is in the forecast. The owner is letting us use a small paddock area for turn out, but no grass.
We had electric hook-up and water close by. We were able to buy some hay as well. As horse motels went, this wasn’t the worst place we have ever stayed, but we would have preferred pasture turn out for the horses. For almost $90/night, this was one of the more expensive layovers we have had.
On Saturday, we went to the Indiana State Fair in Indianapolis. To say we were psychologically unprepared would be an understatement. We have been to the Santa Clara County Fair and the California State Fair. Apparently, these fairs are mere amateurs to how they do state fairs in the mid-West. First off, hundreds of thousands of people…more people than I have ever seen. Food booths and farm exhibits, but not that much in the way of entertainment. Compared to the dance and musical numbers we have seen in our home state fairs, the amount of entertainment at the Indiana State Fair was rather sparce. We caught two shows - a high dive act that was excellent (see video) and a dog show that was so-so.
On Sunday, we visited a local community pool. $3 each for seniors. This was a wonderful resource. There were water slides, a water play area for toddlers - a rock climbing toy pool-side. It was nice to cool off.
On Monday night, we moved to the Double H Horse Stables in LaFayette about 20 minutes away from the Equine Hospital where Lennox had his appointment scheduled. We wanted to stage our location so it would be easy for us to make the appointment. This is not a regular horse motel. Nadia, the owner, basically took pity on us and allowed us to put the horses in her round pen and plug into a 110 outlet in her barn so we could run our air conditioner.
And now on Tuesday afternoon, we sit in the parking lot at the Purdue Equine Hospital. Lennox is in the hospital undergoing his cardiac exam. Mercutio is hanging out in a paddock, braying for Lennox. Ari and I are hanging out in the LQ, waiting for the vets to come out and tell us what the diagnosis and prognosis are.
