We are currently staying at the Elkhorn Campgrounds in Elkhorn, Wisconsin. This is about an hour north of Chicago and 45 minutes west of Milwaukee. For Father’s Day, I decided to drive Ari into Milwaukee for a cheese tasting.
Before the cheese tasting, we had lunch at the Milwaukee Brat House. This was a fabulous choice. The food was wonderful as was the service. We couldn’t eat the bratwurst (pork), but Ari had a burger and I had an all beef hot dog. Ari had parmesan fries and I had the cheese curds which were amazing. No wonder people in Milwaukee are so happy…they get marvelous food and the weather has been lovely. The restaurant provides free shuttle service to all the sports games in the area. There are three stadiums/arenas for hocky, basketball, and baseball within a few miles of downtown.
Temperatures have been in the low 70s and no biting insects! We have appreciated the respite.
The Wisconsin Cheese Mart is a Milwaukee institution, almost 100 years old and over 100 types of cheeses, almost all from Wisconsin.
The door entry…Ari is already inside as he was ready to eat cheese. We ended up buying three different cheeses…we have limited room in the trailer, but it is definitely worth checking out.
We spent some time walking along the Milwaukee River. The drawbridges are amazing to watch in action. There are tour boats up and down the river as well as kayaks and you can rent various water craft to spend time on the water.
Of course, I had to visit the life-size bronze of The Fonz. “Happy Days” was a popular show during my high school years. Tourists line up to take a selfie or a picture with the statue.
The architecture in downtown Milwaukee is quite striking and we enjoyed the River Walk a great deal. There were musicians out performing here and there along the walk.
The public art was also well worthwhile. Wisconsin embraces it’s reputation as a dairy state.
