Once again, we hit a state park where the equestrian campsite is outside the main campground.
However, the RV dump is located inside the main campground, so we went into the office/visitor center/gift shop and registered. They told us how to get to the equestrian campground and gave us a tag for our vehicle.
We were already in the main campground and we wanted to dump our tanks. In order to access the RV dump, we had to circle around the campground and then pull into the dump area. Then we had to exit the main campground, turn left, cross a bridge, and make a left at Archery Range Rd. The equestrian campground is on the right. If you have reservations, you can go directly to the campground.
Also, they lock the gate after 10 pm, so if you plan on being out somewhere late, you need a gate code to open the gate.
The first four campsites are water only, the next four are water/electric. Costs about $20/night.
There is a wash rack and a picnic pavilion. There are porta potties, but the shower house is in the main campground. There are no stalls\corrals provided.
You can use portable corrals, high lines, or a portable electric fence. We use our Corrals2Go portable corral. We put up the pop-up canopy because rain was forecast and we like the horses to have some cover.
Their website says 14 miles of trails, but there are a lot of trails that don't show up on the provided map or Gaia.
We didn’t see any snakes or tortoise. Temps were in the high 50’s/low 60’s, so it was probably too cold for them to come out of their dens.
You are riding through a forest on flat, sandy trails.
This is the longest bridge we have ever ridden over. It was quite beautiful and the horses did fine. We looked for signs that said “no horses”, but we didn’t see any. I prayed that the civil/structural engineer that designed the bridge understood tolerances and loads. Each horse and rider weighs about 1400 lbs, so that bridge needed to hold.
Winegard worked fine, cell service was limited. Stores and shopping are in Douglas, about 10 minutes away.
...you're doin it! This is awesome Elise!
