The Land Between the Lakes sounds like a bad translation of a Native American hunting ground, but actually it is a creation entirely from the imagination of a bunch of white guys in the 1960’s. Signed off by JFK in 1963, they built some bridges so the land could be accessed by tourists and created several campgrounds and a bison and elk preserve.
We didn’t see any bison or elk or bald eagles (which also are supposed to nest in the area), but we did see this tortoise on the trail. There were actually several of these guys out and about.
We had a full hook-up site, but she wouldn’t give me the senior rate. I had made the reservation under my name and we use Ari’s Golden Pass card. This was the first time the ranger required the reservation be made under the same name as the senior pass holder.
The campsites were decent sized. There was no campground WIFI and no cell service. Our Winegard worked fine on the Winegard SIM card, but not good enough for streaming.
The equestrian campground is quite large. We had a back-in site, but there were a few pull-through sites as well.
The horses did not like their accommodations. They were in small covered stalls.
There is a round pen located at the front of the campground, but it was a hike from our campsite. All of the campsites have picket lines behind them, so we set up our highline so the horses could get a little time outside their stalls.
There are over 100 miles of trails and some of the trails are set up for buggies as well.
We rode two of the three days we were there. Temperatures were in the high 80’s and the humidity was around 75%. It made it really uncomfortable to ride at all.
But, the trails were quite pretty. There was mud and some rocks, but not too bad.
