This was our second visit to General Coffee State Park in Douglas, Georgia. Once again, we rode across the bridge on the Nature Trail. You get water and electric hook-up at four of the campsites in the equestrian area. Check out my previous post about General Coffee State Park for more details.
We were getting ready to pack up and hit the road when I got a call from one of the rangers. The State of Georgia has hired a local company to make a promotional video and take photographs of the state parks to promote the state park system. Would we mind if the crew came to us and took some pictures and videos of the horses? Of course! We want and need equestrian campsites to stay open and a great way to do that is to show people that camping with horses is wonderful.
The horses were a little leery of the camera equipment, but they warmed up to the crew after getting some horse treats and pets. The crew said they would email me when the video is posted. This may be a national campaign, so if you see our horses on TV in a few months, you can say you know those guys. And, yes, they are wearing their Shoo-Fly Leggins from Deb in some of the pictures, so she gets some free product placement as well.
Our next stop was the Southeastern Arena in Unadilla, Georgia. This is just a horse motel.
The horses spent the night in horse jail - their least favorite accommodation. But they were safe. Stalls were clean and filled with bedding on arrival. $30/horse and $20 for electric/water hook-up for the night. There is an RV dump we can use as we trailer out.
We had a safe level spot close to the barn to park the trailer. Our Winegard and cell phones worked fine. There isn’t much in the way of restaurants or shopping in the area. We had the misfortune of choosing to eat at the Country Buffet, located a half mile down the road. If the Sweet Potato Cafe at Stone Mountain is one of the best places to eat in Georgia, we now can tell you the Country Buffet might rank as the worst place to eat in the entire state. Prisoners at Folsom State Prison get better meals and pay a lot less. This was just a one night layover to break up the drive as we head to Hard Labor Creek State Park, just east of Atlanta.
